In July 2020, the Government of India banned 43 Chinese apps with one massive stroke of restriction. Many believe it was an act of retaliation for the brutal killing of our twenty soldiers in the Galwan valley by the Chinese soldiers. Well, that is not the only reason. The decision deals with a huge range of threats that these apps inflicted on our society as well as national security.
Primarily, these are shopping, dating, gaming, and scanner apps. Their wrongdoings and unethical deeds were heavily affecting our country and weakening us like dangerous viruses.
Dating Sites: Millions of Indians, including defense and government personnel, were active on these Chinese dating sites. These sites have been found guilty of webbing honey traps and security breaches.
Gaming apps: These apps were capturing too much access to phones of Indian users, for example, taking access to their microphones, video cameras, locations, etc. They were tracking their activities, locations, and movements, and sending sensitive information to Chinese IPs, or storing the same on various Chinese servers.
Shopping Sites: Capturing our banking details and tracking our purchasing behaviors and habits. They created huge databases of Indians and stored these in the Chinese servers.
Scanners: In today's day and age, a wide number of businesses, regardless of sizes, use scanners to send various business documents and contracts digitally. These Chinese apps exploited this convention. These blocked apps have been found guilty of storing scanned versions of confidential documents of Indian users, without their consent or knowledge, on Chinese servers which are completely accessible by the Chinese Government. Our confidential deals and details were going to their hands.
Here are the following apps that got banned and have been found guilty of damaging our societal and national integrity, security, and sovereignty:
